Showed up church last week. Realized left all supplies at home. Had twenty kids staring at me. No crafts. No materials. Nothing.
Had improvise with what was in room. Turned out fine. Actually better than planned lesson.
Heads Up Seven Up
Remember this from elementary school? Still works.
Seven kids stand front. Rest put heads down thumbs up. Seven kids each tap one thumb. Kids guess who tapped them.
Zero supplies needed. Just kids and thumbs.
Takes up fifteen minutes easy. Kids love it. Especially ones picked be tappers.
Had kid peek every single time. Other kids called him out. He denied it. Everyone knew was cheating. Still fun.
Simon Says
Literally needs nothing. Just person giving directions.
"Simon says touch your nose." Kids touch noses.
"Jump up and down." Kids who jump are out because didn't say Simon Says.
Gets kids moving. Burns energy. Reinforces listening skills.
Make it Bible themed. "Simon says part Red Sea with your arms." "Simon says march around Jericho." Sneaks in Bible story reminders while playing.
Kid always does action even when don't say Simon Says. Gets out immediately every time. Doesn't care. Just happy participate.
Four Corners
Number corners room one through four. Call out number. Kids run that corner. Repeat.
Start eliminating corners. Last corner standing wins.
No supplies. Just room with corners. Which every room has.
Kids sprint across room. Sometimes crash into each other. Nobody hurt just dramatic.
Bible version: Label corners different Bible characters. Call out description. "Run to person who was swallowed by fish." Kids run Jonah corner.
Had kid run wrong corner every time. Wasn't paying attention clues. Just followed other kids. They led him wrong on purpose. He figured out eventually.
Red Light Green Light
One person is stoplight. Back turned says green light. Kids move toward them. Says red light and turns around. Anyone still moving goes back start.
First person tag stoplight wins. Becomes new stoplight.
Needs nothing except space.
Kids terrible at staying still. Always someone moving during red light. Usually same kid every round.
Bible version: Person is Joshua. Kids are Israelites crossing Jordan River. Joshua says river's stopped move forward. Joshua says river's flowing again freeze.
Hot and Cold
Hide something in room. Could be anything. Eraser. Marker. Someone's shoe.
One kid leaves room. Hide object. Kid comes back. Other kids say hot when getting closer. Cold when moving away.
No supplies needed beyond random object already in room.
Kids yell HOT so loud when person right next object. Give it away every time. Defeats purpose but they're having fun.
Had kid hide object in his pocket. Other kid searched for twenty minutes. Never found it. Was mad when found out. Fair.
Freeze Dance
Play music or sing song. Kids dance. Stop music. Kids freeze.
Anyone still moving is out. Last person frozen wins.
Only needs music. Can even just clap rhythm or hum if no music available.
Kids freeze in weirdest positions. Fall over trying hold position. Blame each other for making them laugh and move.
Bible songs work. "Father Abraham" everyone doing motions then freeze. "I've Got Joy" freeze mid-jump.
Telephone
Kids sit in line or circle. Whisper sentence first kid. They whisper next kid. Continue down line. Last kid says what they heard.
Always completely different from original sentence. That's the fun part.
Needs nothing. Just kids and whispers.
Start with Bible verse or story. See how mangled gets by end.
"Jesus fed five thousand people" becomes "Cheese said bye loud purple penguins."
Kids think it's hilarious. Not sure they're learning anything but they're engaged.
Category Game
Call out category. Kids take turns naming things in that category. Repeat gets you out. Can't think of one gets you out.
"Name books Bible." "Name animals Noah had on ark." "Name disciples."
Zero supplies. Just knowledge and quick thinking.
Older kids dominate. Younger kids struggle. Pair them up teams so older can help younger.
Had kid say "Bob" as disciple name. Told him that's not right. He argued maybe was disciple named Bob we just don't know about. Can't completely prove him wrong so let it slide.
Two Truths and Lie
Each kid says three statements about themselves. Two true. One lie. Others guess which is lie.
Gets kids talking. Learning about each other. Thinking critically.
Needs nothing except kids willing share.
Some kids make lie really obvious. "I have dog. I like pizza. I'm secretly Batman." Thanks for making it easy.
Other kids make it hard. Can't tell what's true at all. Good liars apparently.
Charades
Act out something without talking. Others guess what is.
Bible version: Act out Bible stories or characters.
Kid acts out Noah. Pretends build ark. Brings in imaginary animals. Other kids guess it.
Someone acts out David and Goliath. Falls down dramatically. Everyone knows immediately.
No supplies needed. Just kids willing look silly. Most kids love looking silly so works great.
Had kid act out burning bush. Just stood there waving arms. Nobody guessed it. He got frustrated. Yelled out answer. That's cheating but whatever.
Would You Rather
Ask "would you rather" questions. Kids move different sides room based on answer.
"Would you rather have Jesus' ability walk on water or multiply food?"
"Would you rather be strong like Samson or wise like Solomon?"
Gets kids thinking. Moving. Discussing their choices.
No supplies. Just questions and opinions.
Kids argue about which choice is better. That's fine. Good discussions happen during arguments.
Bible Verse Memory Race
Say first part verse. Kids race say ending.
Or say verse reference. Kids race recite verse.
Could do teams. Could do individuals. Could do buzz in style.
No supplies unless count Bible as supply. Most rooms have Bible.
Kids who know verses feel smart. Kids who don't know them learn them by hearing others say them repeatedly.
Had kid make up verse endings when didn't know real ones. Creative but incorrect.
Stand Up Sit Down
Call out statements. If true for kid they stand. If false stay sitting.
"Stand up if have sibling." "Stand up if been baptized." "Stand up if know John 3:16."
See who has things in common. Who knows what. Who's experienced what.
Zero supplies. Just statements and movement.
Kids look around see who else standing. Build connections over shared experiences.
Animal Sounds Game
Whisper animal name each kid. Same animal multiple kids.
Everyone closes eyes makes their animal sound. Has find others making same sound.
Forms groups without talking just by listening.
No supplies. Just animal noises. Gets loud. Also funny.
Bible animals: Dove. Lion. Sheep. Donkey. Snake.
Kids make sounds way louder than necessary. Whole church can hear them. That's fine.
What Makes These Games Work
Can do them anywhere. Church. Classroom. Outside. Wherever.
Don't need plan ahead. Don't need supplies. Don't need budget.
Kids already know most these games. Don't need explain complicated rules.
Fill time when something else falls through. When running short. When need quick activity.
Actually engage kids. Moving. Thinking. Participating.
When They Don't Work
Room too small. Some games need space.
Kids too young. Some games require understanding rules younger kids don't have yet.
Too many kids. Some games fall apart with large groups.
Kids too wound up. Some days can't handle any game. Too chaotic already.
Why Use Them
Because forget supplies lot. Because budget is nonexistent. Because sometimes planned activity flops and need backup.
Also because they work. Kids have fun. Learn things. Burn energy. Build community.
Don't need fancy materials have good kids ministry. Just need ideas and willingness let kids play.
These games prove that. Cost nothing. Require nothing. Work anyway.
Saved me countless times when showed up unprepared. Will save me countless more times.
That's good enough reason keep using them
